about

Ever since I was a teenager I was a composer. Indeed, I did not take guitar playing super seriously until I went to college. That is when the 5 hour practice sessions began for me. Until then it was all about writing music. Fast forward over twenty years. Having made a living as a freelance player since the 90s it was time to make a 'solo' record. No plan for audiences, marketing or anything. The album just had to be made. I spent some months 'work shopping' the tunes then assembled a band purely for the purposes of recording. The focus was always going to be more on the writing rather than my playing/soloing. I like being in the band rather than simply fronting the band. The final result is 'Outlook' which was released on Pathway Records in November 2016. This has turned into an on going project with a regular line up and a few gigs under our belt. Definitely more music to come!

RED DWARF
This composition was constructed over a number of years. Initially I had been influenced by the 1970s prog band Gentle Giant. Some of their compositional techniques such as multiple rhythmic layers and mirroring of melody in the bass gave me the ideas for the piece. It is one of the most through composed pieces I have written but I was quite pleased with the final outcome. It features blowing from nearly the whole band. I went for a Robben Ford type of tone and approach on this one, bluesy with the relevant 'jazz' notes creeping in. The title? It's a play on Gentle Giant rather than a reference to the cult sit/com!

WHILE THE CAT'S AWAY
I wrote this piece whilst studying at the GSMD. The feel of the piece is very much in the 'European' jazz style. The harmonies are influenced by those of the trumpeter Kenny Wheeler. I like the atmosphere created by colourful chords and the blend of the guitar with the two horns. This is a tonality Wheeler used to great effect on a number of his records. Again we get solo sections from most of the band, Dave Whitford on double bass, me, Paul Booth on tenor and Graeme Flowers on flugelhorn.

TOUGH TIME
What kind of 'tough' do I mean with the title? Is it time to get tough, or are things difficult? Who knows!? This piece definitely has a brooding atmosphere and again uses the trumpet/sax/guitar blend of voices. I love Graeme's solo on this one. Just when you think he has played his most climactic phrase he takes it one step further!

SAMBA MAYHEM
This is a fun, raucous Latin flavoured tune. There are contrasting quieter sections which lead us into the frantic sections in 7/8 time. The 'chase' section between Graeme and Paul really heightens the drama. In the final vamp section John gives us some dense textures as he solos over the repeating chords. I didn't record I guitar solo on this one as I really wanted the horns to take centre stage.

OUTLOOK
I wrote this with the band Weather Report in mind. In the end I don't think it sounds anything like Weather Report but the title reflects the original inspiration. 'Outlook' can also be referring to ones world view. The outlook for the next few years seems very unpredictable politically, economically and socially but this piece has a fairly upbeat and optimistic feel. Paul's solo really hits the vibe I was going for. Reminds me a bit of Chris Potter. I took a more John Scofield approach with my tone and phrasing on this one too.

RIVERS
The chords of this piece have a smooth ebb and flow, which reminds me of the flow a river can take. The title came very obviously to me for this reason. Yet another slightly moody piece but I enjoy the way the B and C sections take on a lighter character. It feels like the sun has come out for awhile. Until the clouds return! Graeme uses great tension notes to extract the drama in his trumpet solo.

IT AIN'T SO BAD
I wrote this as a harmonic exercise, many years ago. The result though is a tune which has the character of on old jazz standard and I used double bass and brushes on the drums to compliment this feel. Graeme plays some lovely Miles like 'squeezed' notes which add a really bluesy flavour. I kept the guitar solo to little fills on the final B section.

YEAH, BUT NO
Yes, this title was taken from the catch phrase of 'Little Britain's' Vicki Pollard. It was a working title but it stuck. This is the rockiest sounding composition on the record with angular lines, riffs and crunchy guitar tones. It is fairly tricky to play in places but I love Paul's solo and the general vibe is a no holds barred rock jam (with some jazzy chords).

So there you go!
